Suffering doesn't lock you out. That's the part nobody tells you up front.
It's the mechanism by which something opens. Buddhism names it the first noble truth, not because it's noble to suffer, but because refusing to acknowledge it keeps every other door closed. Frankl found meaning inside a concentration camp not by escaping what he endured but by going further into it than his captors could follow. Nietzsche didn't say suffering builds character as comfort. He said it as a warning: the forge doesn't care whether you wanted to be metal.
The barbed wire wrapped around the keys isn't decorative. You can't hold what unlocks suffering without the instrument cutting back. That's the cost of the access. What gets opened is what's primal and what's mortal, the two things civilization spends most of its energy papering over.
Most people drop the keys. That's also a choice.
