Everyone who's ever said that meant it as comfort. The graphic disagrees.

What's inside isn't automatically good. It isn't the real you waiting patiently beneath the performance: virtuous, pure, misunderstood. That's the version of the phrase that asks nothing of you. The harder reading is that the interior is simply unfiltered: older, stranger, less managed than anything you'd voluntarily show. Socrates called the unexamined life not worth living. He didn't say examination was pleasant. He just said the alternative was worse.

The eye in what pours out is the detail that matters. Whatever is inside, it sees. It was watching the whole time. Self-knowledge doesn't grant you distance from what you find. It makes you accountable to it.

Breaking the surface isn't optional if the inside counts. That's the part the cliché always leaves out.
